• About the Exhibition

Within the context of a graduate course and an undergraduate design studio, Grandbazaar became the focus of the urban research & reading area; a discovery field where experiences of the place experimented, presented and re-presented. With its ever articulating and changing physical and fictive structure, without hiding its imperfect embodiment, the Grandbazaar is a constantly evolving "playground" in the thoughts of coordinators and students of this project. The project presents the place analysis, living sections and audio-visual works of a group of graduate and undergraduate students from Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture.

KAPALIÇARŞI PROJECT According to Cross and Nigel’s “Designerly Ways of Knowing”, there are three stages to learn a place from a designer’s point of view. - First one is things to know, - Second is ways of learning them, - And third is ways of finding out about them. So in this project, while examining Kapalıçarşı, these steps are taken into consideration. In the first step, things to know about Kapalıçarşı are studied such as location of the place, functions in the place and usage of the place. In the second step, as a way of learning Kapalıçarşı, examining ground, time, being and experiment is chosen as a method. It is decided that working on these tools is the best way of understanding a place, since they correspond with five dimensions of a place which are width, length, height, time and psychology. Thus, change in ground, in human behavior and living is studied relative to the change in time. In the last step, while thinking on finding out about Kapalıçarşı, the effect of it in the city is questioned and it is figured out that its significance as a shopping place has dramatically decreased. Noticing the problem, the reasons behind it is studied and it is understood that, this issue is not due to the quality of the bazaar or shopping facilities in there, but it is mainly due to the change in shopping habit in centuries. After the invention of assembly line, the mass production has begun; therefore handcraft has lost its importance. In Istanbul, shopping centers which are selling mass production goods has increased immediately and this increase indeed was like a mass production of shopping centers. However, after 2000, it can be said that a new period has started and the distances has lost its importance in information age. That’s why; shopping centers began to leave their function to online shopping trend lately.
